Walk this way

A Northumberland guided walks provider is making sure wanderlusts donít become wanderlusts in the county countryside.

Shepherds Walks is pioneering Global Positioning System (GPS) training for walkers.

With the use of hand-held GPS units, walkers have a helpful navigational tool, which can be used in its own right or in emergency situations.

Shepherds Walks teamed up with GPS Training from Cumbria to bring their highly acclaimed courses to the newly constructed conference facilities at the home of Shepherds Walks, Kirkharle Courtyard, west of Morpeth.

Peter Dunn, of GPS Training, said: íTeaming up with Shepherds Walks and being able to use the new facilities at Kirkharle is ideal for our courses. Being able to step out of the classroom into the Northumberland countryside to put what people are learning into immediate practice is second to none.í

Shepherds Walks ran its first course late last year and had to add an extra dayís training because of the overwhelming interest from walkers and wanderlusts.

A number of complete novices came along to try different hand held units and to see if they could benefit from the use of this new technology.

Another weekend of courses will be running at Kirkharle Courtyard on March 4 and 5.

The first on the Saturday is to get people started and the second on the Sunday is for more experienced users who want to find the true capabilities of these clever hand-held devices.
