walk notes

This superb walk encircles Fontburn Reservoir, but not before visiting the ‘Goats on the Roof’.

After visiting the goats this lovely route takes you through Greenleighton Farm, the farm Jon (the Shepherd from Shepherds Walks) used to work on before visiting the remote homestead of Fallowlees, which has now very much has been forested. In the past though it was very much a working farm on the top end of Wallington Estate.

You are then treated to a superb view of the reservoir. Fontburn Reservoir was built in 1910, to supply water to 300,000 people in Morpeth, Ashington and Whitley Bay. It holds 730 million gallons, covers 84 acres and supplies five and a half million gallons of water each day.

This lesser known area of Northumberland is truly one of the hidden gems and makes for a great walk.
