walk notes

After meeting in Rothbury we will catch the 'Spirit bus' (10.45 bus) to Netherton.

From below Biddlestone Quarry the route runs west on softer sedimentary rocks.  The underlying bedrock, glacial and alluvial deposits here are responsible for the fertile soils that support the arable farming that predominates south of the Cheviot Hills.

The upland and pastoral hill sheep farming section of the route uses Clennel Street and the Alwin valley passing through Old Rookland.

This is a walk of two strongly contrasting halves based on the marked differences in underlying geology which are reflected in the relief and topography, microclimates, soils, land use, building styles, settlement patterns, history and archaeology of this richly diverse, attractive and tranquil landscape.

We will then be catching the 15.02 bus from Alwinton back to Rothbury.
