Shepherds Walks Tour of Northumberland - Above and around the Harthope.

There are nine distinct sub-regions within Northumberland.  They all differ noticeably from each other and the aim of this series of walks is to demonstrate the variety of landscapes in the county.  Each month’s walk will visit a different area to see and experience the variety that Northumberland has to offer and every walk is designed to capture the special characteristics of the area.

This months walk looks at - Above and around the Harthope.

The Cheviots provide a distinctive contrast to adjacent areas.  Their smooth rounded hills form a wild, open, windswept landscape dominated by moorland almost devoid of permanent settlement.

The broad plateaux comprise grass and heather moorland, the summit areas being mainly areas of blanket bog and heather.  There are granitic ‘tors,’ deep ravines and rocky outcrops with steep scree slopes on northern flanks of Cheviots.

Coniferous plantations are a feature of the area and steep-sided valleys provide sheltered sites for dispersed farmsteads.  Prehistoric landscapes are a feature of the area which, together with the Kielder region, comprises the least populated and most remote areas of Northumberland.

The Cheviots are often mentioned as providing amongst the best and quietest upland walking in the UK.
