Shepherds Walks Tour of Northumberland - Budle Bay and Bamburgh.

There are nine distinct sub-regions within Northumberland.  They all differ noticeably from each other and the aim of this series of walks is to demonstrate the variety of landscapes in the county.  Each monthís walk will visit a different area to see and experience the variety that Northumberland has to offer and every walk is designed to capture the special characteristics of the area.

This months walk looks at - Budle Bay and Bamburgh.

A coast and country circular from the car park below Bamburgh Castle focussing on the landscape of the North Northumberland Coast Plain and the Farne Islands.

Both Bamburgh Castle & the Farneís are prominent because of the hard rock that also underlies Hadrianís Wall, the dolerite of the Whin Sill.

This narrow windswept coast plain has views towards a diverse hard and soft rock coastal scenery and inland to the Cheviots.  Agriculture is mainly arable, intensive and, along with the coast and off-shore islands, provides a rich habitat for resident and migratory birds.  Farms are mainly dispersed and isolated.

The rich historic heritage of the area is related to the proximity of the Anglo-Scottish border, earlier Scandinavian and ecclesiastical influences as well as the First and Second World Wars covering prehistory to the present.
