Shepherds Walks Tour of Northumberland - Craster and Dunstanburgh night walk (North Northumberland Coast Plain sub-region

There are nine distinct sub-regions within Northumberland.  They all differ noticeably from each other and the aim of this series of walks is to demonstrate the variety of landscapes in the county.  Each month’s walk will visit a different area to see and experience the variety that Northumberland has to offer and every walk is designed to capture the special characteristics of the area.

A coast and country circular walk into the twilight and darkness on the night of the full moon.  We will walk into the darkness towards Dunstanburgh and hopefully see the moon rise over the sea an hour or so later, depending on the cloud cover of course.

On a moonlit night you will have little need of a torch but bring one anyway (plus spare batteries).  You will be surprised what you can see using your night vision alone.  Hopefully Dunstanburgh Castle will be silhouetted against the sky as we turn towards Craster and with dark skies we hope to be able to identify some of the constellations situated away from the bright moon.

Coastal walking at night can be a magical experience and there will be plenty of opportunity to use your other senses as hearing, touch and smell become more acute to compensate for lack of vision.  Bring binoculars, food and a hot drink as we will stop for a picnic in the dark en-route and keep our eyes and ears open for owls etc.  If we’re lucky we will spot aircraft on the trans-Atlantic route and even the odd satellite.

If you have never walked on the coast or in the country at night come and give it a try.  You will be surprised what there is to experience, give yourself a treat, do something different.
