Alston station car park (grid reference NY 717468). This is situated just off the A686 Hexham to Penrith road, North of Alston town centre. Look for the brown tourist signs on roads leading into Alston.
This walk takes in the lovely area to the South of Alston, Cumbria. You start off by following the River South Tyne, before climbing up on to the lower ground of Alston Moor. From here you are treated to some spectacular views of both the higher ground all around you and the river down below.
After skirting around the highest golf course in England you then drop down and cross the river and start your return trip to Alston. You are treated to a feast of wildlife on this walk, red squirrels in the wooded sections and an abundance of bird life, which feed from the rivers.
The walk is good under foot and involves very little climbing, but strong shoes are recommended.
If you don't fancy driving in to the Lake District this walk on the edge of Cumbria is certainly worth trying.
JS wrote - Recently purchased walk 55, which I completed on Tuesday. It was a lovely walk with good clear instructions and some beautiful scenery. The farmer at Annat Walls obviously has a sense of humour, as at the second gate you pass through he has posted a sign at the gate warning of bears for the next (It's not until you read the bottom that you realise it comes from Canada). We also saw a red squirrel before you drop down to Natrass Gill. A wonderful sight. Overall, a smashing walk that I thoroughly enjoyed it.
