Nordic walking

Tue 4th January 2011

What is Nordic Walking?

Nordic walking is an enhancement of ordinary walking it makes something we can all do twice as effective It uses poles to add two major benefits to walking upper body muscles are used as well as the legs the poles help to propel the walker along which means that he/she works harder than usual yet the support given by the poles makes it feel easier Nordic walking is not the same as trekking, hill walking or trail running as the poles are planted in a specific way that increases the use of the upper body. It can be applied as a fitness technique, a healthy walking concept, as part of a rehabilitation programme, or as a highly effective exercise for sports conditioning.

Shepherds Walks promote the healthy walking concept. Nordic walking is highly effective, affordable, sociable and fun Brief history of Nordic Walking It was developed in the 1930s by cross country skiers in Finland who used it as a way of maintaining their fitness during the summer.

Nordic walking became extremely popular in Scandinavian countries in the 1980s as a recreational fitness exercise that people could fit into their everyday lives that gave them a total body workout that was simple and fun. Nordic walking is the fastest growing fitness activity in the world and is used by individuals, personal trainers, health clubs, physiotherapists, doctors and health promoters.
