Rothbury and Coquetdale Walking festival 2011

Rothbury and Coquetdale Walking festival 2011

Sun 6th March 2011

Northumberland National Park has again teamed up with Shepherds Walks to bring together the 3rd Rothbury and Coquetdale Walking festival in June.

Building on the success of the past two years with visitors coming from as far afield as the Isle of Wight, especially for the week of walking in some of the best landscape Northumberland has to offer, it has shown in the past what a great draw Northumberland can be for such an event.

This year the Walking Festival has got some truly unique guided walks lined up, which could only be achieved by Northumberland National Park and Shepherds Walks joining forces. Some of the highlights are -

-    Drover Roads of Coquetdale – An 8 mile guided walk looking at the old drover roads that criss-crossed Rothbury and Coquetdale.

-    Nordic Walking – A full days training course for those wanting to try out this new activity, the popularity of which is sweeping across the country. Poles are provided.

-    Whiskey Stills of Coquetdale – A 9 mile walk looking at the sites of some of the elicit Whiskey Stills that are in the Coquet Valley.

-    Cragside Challenge Walk – The finale of the Walking Festival is a 13 mile self guided ‘challenge walk’ which passes through Cragside and the countryside that surrounds Rothbury (free entry to Cragside on the day of event provided for participants.)

With sixteen walks over eight days there is something for everybody, from short history walks to walks along the border ridge between England and Scotland.

Last year over 200 people came to Northumberland for the Walking Festival and it is hoped to build on this in 2011.

The 2011 Rothbury and Coquetdale Walking Festival runs from the 18th – 25th June 2011 and for more information please visit or call 01830 540453 and a free programme can be posted out to you.
