walk summary

This walk explores the wonderful scenery around Ullswater before climbing up a little where you are treated to some spectacular views of this famous ‘serpentine’ shaped lake, which makes Ullswater so appealing. This wonderful shape is a result of complex geology in the area and the changing landscape makes the scenery of this walk so varied.

Once you have climbed ‘above’ the lake you pass and visit a stone circle called ‘The Cockpit’. This is the largest of the Moor Divock circles and is a low bank of stones, about ten feet wide surrounding an inner circle, which measures approximately 90 feet in diameter.

After this you drop back down to Pooley Bridge, passing a number of it’s historic buildings before returning to your car.

The walk is mostly good under foot, but strong shoes are recommended.

shepherd's notes

Ullswater is one of the finest lakes Cumbria has to offer.

A great walk in the Northern Lake District, with easy access from the M6.
