walk summary

This walk explores the lovely countryside around Maiden Castle, which stands high above Ullswater. Once a defended settlement, it was probably home to a family group in the first millennium BC.

You get out to Maiden Castle by skirting around the edge of Dunmallard Hill, which is crowned with an Iron Age Hillfort, before passing through some wonderful farmland.

Your return trip takes you to a magnificent view point which is located just above Salmond’s plantation, where stunning 360 degree views are experienced of not only the surrounding fells, but Penrith away to the North East.

In winter the fields can get quite wet underfoot so please take this into consideration if a lot of rain has fallen.

One of the lovely walks in this lovely area in the Lake District.
