walk summary

This wonderful walk discovers the picturesque area of Barbodale with its woodland walk following the Barbon Beck through the Barbon Manor estate, famous for the motorcycle hill climb, amongst other things.

From the lowland you climb steeply up eventually skirting just below the summit of Brownthwaite. From here you are treated to some magnificent views of the Lakeland Fells and the coast, on a clear day.

After you have dropped back down you follow a lovely wall lined lane, with sixteen sheep folds along its length. Baffled? Well you have to do the walk to find out more. Then you walk through some idyllic farmland, passing Whelprigg House, which was built in 1834, before you drop back in to Barbon itself.

This walk is good under foot but strong shoes are required.

It is one of the best walks in Cumbria well away from the crowds of the Lake District.
