walk summary

This difficult route discovers some of the true high peaks in the Lake District. After a gentle start to the walk you climb steeply up from Ennerdale Water through some rough ground as you ascend up to Tewit How. As you climb up you are treated to some spectacular views of the ground you have covered.

Upon reaching the ridge between Haycock and Scoat Fell you climb up to Scoat Fell itself with Steeple (2687 feet) away to your left. If you are ahead of time Steeple is well worth a short detour here, as itís one of the finest summits in the Lake District, a small patch of grass near the cairn makes a perfect picnic spot, perched precariously close to the edge.

After a stunning walk across Wind Gap you have a steep climb up on to Steeple itself (2927 feet), with itís spectacular views. From here you have a steep route down, via White Pike, before a more leisurely walk through Ennerdale Forest as you return to your car.

This walk is for the serious walker as there are a few sections of hard walking/scrambling both on the ascent and the descent.
