  • Time: 4 hours
  • Difficulty: Moderate
  • Starting Point: Orton
  • OS Map: Explorer OL19

This lovely varied walk explores the spectacular scenery to the north of the picturesque village of Orton.

You climb up to Great Asby Scar nature reserve, which contains some of the best examples of limestone pavement in Britain. English Nature manages the reserve and as it has never been grazed since 1998. It is interesting to see the regeneration of the natural vegetation.

The route returns over Gaythorne Plain and Beacon Hill with its striking monument erected to celebrate the anniversary of Queen Victoria being on the throne for fifty years. You then drop back down to the village of Orton, passing a limekiln on the way.

This wonderfully varied walk is striking in the contrast of the limestone pavements on the high ground to the lush fields of the valley bottom.

shepherd's notes

A brilliant walk that rewards you with some great views.

Change for route notes - Dec 07 - The Mad Monks Music shop in Orton, where the walk starts and finishes, has been closed and is now a series of single storey workshops but the lay-by is still there.
