Above Kielder Walk, Northumberland

Walk 17 - Above Kielder Water

This is a delightful walk that follows the Lewis burn upstream away from Kielder water. It leaves the crowded areas of Kielder well behind as you gradually climb up through the forest to some undiscovered places of tranquillity, with just the trickle of the burn in the background for company. It is a great example of some of the great walks that we have in Northumberland.

Your return journey ends with a lovely section following the Akensnaw burn before you join up again with the Lewis burn. This section follows some lovely woodland tracks and there are plenty of points of interest on the way.

This walk is one that deserves to be given plenty of time to just stop and appreciate the unspoilt beauty around you.

The walk is mostly good under foot except for one short section that is a little rough. Therefore strong shoes are recommended.

It is a great example of some of the great walks that we have in Northumberland.

A great walk above Kielder Water suitable for most levels of fitness.

G wrote – ‘My husband and I have been enjoying your walks since last year and recently completed the ‘Above Kielder Water’ walk (no.17). We did enjoy this walk, especially the remoteness of it, as there was no one to be seen!

We completed this walk today but started and finished at Mathews Linn which added 2 miles to the walk, the walk was good except for the section from (The Herds) were you go up through the forest to pick up a forest track, its about 1 mile through thick boggy grass and we had to get over 6 felled trees, nice walk back to the car park following the trail, a good days walking.
