Whitton Hillhead Walk, Northumberland

Walk 1 - Whitton Hillhead

This is one of the best medium length walks in Northumberland that starts with a nice gentle climb up to 212 metres (700 ft) at Whitton Hillhead where beautiful views of the Simonside Hills to the south and Thropton the the south can be seen. A superb walk that is not too strenious.

walk summary

This is one of the best medium length walks we have in Northumberland.

It is a nice gentle walk that climbs up to 212 metres (700 ft) at Whitton Hillhead, where beautiful views of the Simonside hills of Northumberland can be seen.

Before you reach Whitton Hillhead you pass the Sharp's Folly which was built for astrological research in the 18th century. As you continue on from there you are presented with some picturesque views looking down on the small town of Rothbury, Northumberland.

You then drop back down and follow the River Coquet as it winds its way into Rothbury. The walk is mostly good under foot but strong shoes are recommended.

If you only do a small number of walks if you are coming to visit Northumberland, this is certainly one of the walks that need to be on your list.

Great walk. Just completed it today and even better is that you provided some great weather.

Good clear instructions and perfect walk for today.

This is my fouth Shepherds Walk I have done and really enjoyed it.

Not a massive amount of climbing, but good views and really liked the section along the river.

Looking forward to following more of your guides.

Thanks.
