Walk 38 - Kirkharle

This walk explores the Kirkharle Estate, with its contrasting landscape.

walk summary

This walk explores the Kirkharle Estate, with its contrasting landscape.

Initially the walk follows a permissive route, which takes you along a breathtaking tree-lined avenue.

You then gradually climb and look down on the hamlet of Kirkwhelpington with St Bartholomews church standing tall.

shepherd's notes

This walk visits a standing stone. This stands in memory of Robert Lorraine who in 1483 was murdered by the Scots at this spot. He was returning home from church alone where he had been in private prayer. The current stone was erected in 1758 to replace an earlier one.
