Simonside Walk, Northumberland

Walk 3 - Simonside

From Rothbury you climb up to what I think are some of the most breathtaking views of Northumberland, with the Cheviots away to the North and Fontburn Reservoir to the South. On a clear day the coast can clearly be followed. A superb walk.

walk summary

This is a pleasant walk suitable for the experienced walker. Strong shoes are required and waterproofs essential as the weather can soon change on the high ridges of Simonside. Of all the walks we have in Northumberland this really does stand out. With lower lying ground surrounding Simonside you get a real feeling of height.

The walk begins on the beautiful Garleigh moors and then gently climbs to an altitude of 429 metres (1500 feet) at the summit of Simonside. From here you will see what I think are some of the most breathtaking views of Northumberland, with the Cheviots away to the North and Fontburn Reservoir to the South. On a clear day the coast can clearly be followed.

The walk ends by following the River Coquet as it winds its way into Rothbury.

This is one of my favorite walks in Northumberland.

shepherd's notes

An excellent walk for keen walkers.

Truly stunning views.

One of those walks in Northumberland that is different every time you walk it. If it is a while since you have done this walk go back and walk it again, or if you are visiting Northumberland head up Simonside, you will really enjoy this walk.

i am a big fan of simonside and walked along the ridge a few times, but never on a Shepherds Walk.

So downloaded your route instructions today and it looks very good. Good clear instructions.

I am off on my first Shepherds Walk tomorrow!

Just wanted to let you know that I did your Simonside walk (9 mile) on Thursday and have to say that it was one of the best walks I have done. I love Northumberlabd but living in Portsmouth don't get to see as much of it as I would like. Thank you for the guide to an excellent walk. The guide was very easy to follow and didn't have to refer to my ordnance survey map once. Thank youPaul
