walk summary

  • Distance: 6.5 miles
  • Time: 3 hours
  • Difficulty: Moderate
  • Starting Point: Bolam
  • OS Map: Explorer OL42

This lovely walk starts off and finishes at the 100-acre beauty spot of Bolam Lake. It is one of the great medium length walks that we have in Northumberland.

After skirting the lake for a short while you pass through some traditional pastoral fields for about half the distance.

You climb slightly to reach East Shaftoe Grange, with its walled garden. You climb very gradually until you reach the moorland section of the walk, with some breathtaking views of the surrounding area, which has involved very little effort.

You descend back down to the fields and amble your way down to a track that returns you to Bolam Lake.

We have so many great walks in Northumberland and this is one that certainly fits into that category.

- More information about the ‘bowl shape’ cut into Shaftoe Crags. A photograph of it is available on the this page. The ‘punchbowl’ was allegedly filled with wine, its capacity being several gallons. This was undertaken during the wedding of W.Blackett of Wallington in 1775. It is well worth checking out.

- While re walking this walk with my family last recently there was an abundance of fishermen around Bolam lake. It was great to see one of them catch a one and a half year old Pike just as we where walking past. I did not envy removing the hook from its mouth when we saw the needle like teeth it had.

Lovely walk and could not believe the sense of isolation at Shaftoe Crags themselves.
