walk summary

This is one of the spectacular walks that we have in Northumberland. It explores some of the little known gems around the Coquetdale Valley, in the heart of Northumberland.

It starts off with a steep climb that rewards you with a fantastic view of the valley, with the river Coquet winding its way down the valley. Then you drop down from this viewpoint and follow the Usway burn as it winds its way through a gorgeous deserted, and yet undiscovered, valley as you slowly gain height.

You then have a short forest section over Middle Hill, which has some points of interest.

As you return via a higher route there are some lovely views away to the West. The track itself, Clennel Street, is an old drover's road, used in the past to drive livestock from the Scottish hills to the English markets.

If you only manage to do a small number of walks in Northumberland this is one that needs to be on your list.

JS wrote - Today we did your Walk 8. When you reach Shillmoor and go up that valley the views are Spectacular. The ruined house at Fairhaugh is being rebuilt. We were expecting Clennell Street to be busy, but it was very quiet.Thankyou for a super walk.

R & C wrote - Usually sub 10 mile hikers, we decided to have a go at the 15 mile Coquetdale walk on Saturday. Spectacular! A bit gruelling during the long Clennel Street section through the woods but more than made up for by the variation of countryside leading up to it and on offer over the last 3-4 miles.

JM wrote - This walk makes a great day out and to keep you going there is a great pub at the end of this walk.
