Perfect for families and those looking for a gentle stroll, this easy circular walk explores one of Northumberland’s hidden gems – the peaceful village of Mitford and its fascinating medieval past.
The route loops around the striking ruins of Mitford Castle, which proudly features the only five-sided keep in England. Perched on a rocky ridge, the castle offers a dramatic centrepiece to the walk, with the River Wansbeck winding gracefully below.
The trail passes through rolling ancient farmland before briefly joining the riverbank. On the return leg, you’ll visit the charming St Mary Magdalene Church, a picturesque and peaceful spot that adds to the tranquil charm of this short but rewarding route.

2. Moderate Circular walk - The Cambo Circle
Distance: 3.5 miles
Start/Finish: Cambo
A gentle yet rewarding circular walk, The Cambo Circle explores the scenic and historic landscapes surrounding Wallington Estate and the charming village of Cambo. It’s an ideal route for those looking to combine natural beauty with a rich sense of heritage.
The walk begins by winding through traditional National Trust-owned estate farmland, where wide tree belts and carefully managed fields reflect the area’s historical stewardship. There’s a peaceful, timeless quality to the landscape that makes it a joy to explore.
Along the route, you’ll pass a historic preaching site where John Wesley, the founder of the Methodist movement, delivered a sermon just nine years before his death. It's a quiet yet powerful reminder of the area’s spiritual and cultural legacy.
As you return to Cambo, you’ll be greeted by the striking presence of Cambo Church. Built in 1842 by Sir John Trevelyan of Wallington Hall, it’s well worth a closer look before rounding off your walk in this picturesque and history-rich village.

3. Moderate Circular Walk - Broadstruther
Distance: 8 miles
Start/Finish: Wooler
This moderate circular walk offers a peaceful escape into the quieter corners of the Cheviot Hills, where the phrase “land of far horizons” truly comes to life. Setting off from Wooler, the route climbs gently into open hill country, with ever-expanding views of The Cheviot – Northumberland’s highest peak – dominating the skyline.
One of the walk’s most intriguing stops is the remote, abandoned farmhouse of Broadstruther, standing silent and solitary in a landscape that feels almost untouched by time. From here, the route continues across low-lying hills and peaceful valleys, passing the secluded but still-inhabited Commonburn House, a working hill farm tucked away in the heart of the hills.
Less trodden than many routes in the area, this walk is ideal for those seeking quiet beauty, subtle drama, and a deeper connection with Northumberland’s rural charm.

4. Difficult Circular Walk - The Schil
Distance: 15 miles
Start/Finish: College Valley
A long and demanding day walk through the wild heart of the Cheviots, this route is ideal for seasoned walkers seeking solitude, elevation, and far-reaching views. The trail begins in the remote College Valley, gradually climbing as it follows the historic St Cuthbert’s Way towards the Border fence – where the sense of isolation is both humbling and inspiring.
The high point of the route is undoubtedly the ascent of The Schil. From its summit, you’re rewarded with some of the finest vistas in Northumberland – rolling hills stretch in every direction, and on a clear day, you’ll feel on top of the world.
The route continues with a descent into the dramatic upper reaches of the College Valley. A short detour leads to the Mountain Rescue Hut, a shelter and landmark steeped in local walking history. From there, a steep descent returns you to the valley floor, rounding off a truly spectacular hill walk.
