walk notes

This winter walk visits two contrasting aspects of Newcastle’s industrial archaeology close to the River Tyne.

In the morning we will walk through the Quayside Sunday Market to view the Seven Bridges that cross the Tyne linking Newcastle and Gateshead.

After lunch we have a private guided tour of the Victoria Tunnel. These are a fully preserved 19th century waggonway under the city which ran from the Town Moor to the Tyne and used to transport coal from Spital Tongues (Leazes Main) Colliery to the river.

It operated between 1842 and the 1860s.The Tunnel was converted into an air raid shelter during World War 2.  If it is a cold day the tunnel temperature is a guaranteed and positively “warm” 12°C with no wind or precipitation (just drips)!
